Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, said they have developed a new technology that allows devices to use natural light to generate electricity.
Researchers call this liquid crystal display technology a two-stage organic photovoltaic liquid crystal display. It is a device that converts natural light into energy. Even the useless light emitted by ordinary liquid crystal displays can be used to activate the device.
The UCLA News Center reported that this new technology was developed by Henry Samueli, a scientist at the School of Engineering, and applied to photovoltaic polarizers.
A photovoltaic polarizer can be used on the liquid crystal display of a device. This allows the screen to capture natural light and then convert it to energy.
According to the report, "UCLA engineers have created a new energy recycling model for electronic devices, including the installation of a liquid crystal display with a built-in photovoltaic polarizer, which can convert ambient light, solar photosynthesis, and its own backlight into electricity. "This new technology can power up to 75 percent of the energy lost in a typical LCD screen.
