Abstract According to Chinese Customs data, in the first quarter of 2013, China imported a total of 19,102 metalworking machine tools, representing a decline of 17.6% compared to the same period in the previous year. The total import value reached approximately $2.7 billion, marking a year-on-year decrease of 14.5%. The average unit price for these machines was around $141,000.
In March alone, the import volume of metalworking machinery rose to 6,988 units, showing a significant increase of 44.4% compared to the previous month. The import value for that month was $917 million, up by 27.4% from February. The average unit price during March stood at $131,000 per machine.
These figures reflect a mixed trend in the metalworking equipment market during the early part of 2013. While overall quarterly imports declined, there was a notable rebound in March, suggesting possible shifts in demand or supply chain dynamics. Analysts suggest that the drop in imports may have been influenced by economic slowdowns and reduced industrial activity, while the monthly increase could signal a recovery in certain sectors. Understanding these fluctuations is essential for businesses and policymakers monitoring the manufacturing and trade landscape in China.
