U.S. Examines Troops of Genetically Modified Wheat Leads Panic Experts Say No Need to Worry at Home

In a recent report by China Voices’ “News Horizons,” a farmer in Oregon discovered wheat plants that showed resistance to herbicides. Upon testing, researchers found that these plants might be linked to genetically modified (GM) wheat developed by Monsanto between 1998 and 2005. This type of GM wheat was designed to withstand certain herbicides, making weed control easier and potentially increasing yields. The revelation sparked widespread concern globally. In 2005, environmental groups pressured Monsanto to halt the large-scale production and planting of its genetically modified wheat in the U.S. The experimental wheat should have been removed from fields long ago. Following the incident, the U.S. government launched an investigation into how the GM wheat had escaped the controlled test sites. Japan immediately canceled its wheat purchase plans, while the European Union announced it would intensify monitoring of U.S. wheat imports. The growing public concern now centers on whether this previously discontinued GM wheat variety could have entered the Chinese market. Could imported seeds or wheat grains be contaminated? The core question remains: Is it safe? On the 29th, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed the discovery of an unapproved transgenic wheat product from Monsanto Biotech Inc. The company had developed GM wheat technology years ago, but due to global rejection, the seeds were never commercially released. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Monsanto’s GM wheat has contaminated fields in Oregon, a state on the U.S. west coast, bordering northern California. U.S. grain traders warn that the contamination issue could damage the U.S. wheat export market, potentially pushing buyers to countries like Russia, Ukraine, and Australia. However, Monsanto stated that if the Roundup Ready gene is present in wheat, there are no safety concerns. Despite this, the U.S. has not yet approved any GM wheat for commercial use, as it remains a staple food for many Westerners. To address public concerns, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USDA) emphasized that there is no evidence that GM wheat has entered the market. Dr. Li Guoxiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, explained that while GM corn and soybeans are widely accepted as animal feed, GM wheat has always been treated with caution. He pointed out that wheat and rice are consumed directly after minimal processing, and current scientific research cannot fully confirm the long-term effects of consuming genetically modified crops on human health. The U.S. is the world’s largest wheat exporter, and Asia imports about 40 million tons annually—nearly one-third of global wheat trade. Major importers like China, South Korea, and the Philippines are closely monitoring the situation. Due to safety concerns, Japan canceled a U.S. wheat order, and the EU reported that around 80% of U.S. wheat exports to Europe are soft white wheat, which is similar to the GM variety. As a result, the EU will conduct stricter inspections on U.S. wheat imports. According to recent data, China imported approximately 1.5 million metric tons of U.S. wheat over the past two months. The question remains: Could this GM wheat have entered the Chinese market? Dr. Li Guoxiang reassured that most of the wheat China imports is used for animal feed, and domestic production meets consumption needs. Additionally, some high-quality wheat varieties are not produced locally, but the risk of genetic contamination is relatively low. He concluded that Chinese consumers do not need to worry excessively.
