U.S. Develops New Sensors to Improve Long-term Monitoring Technology Effectively

With the development of science and technology dynamic technology advances, the world entered the information age. In the process of using information, the first thing to be solved is to obtain accurate and reliable information. Sensors, as the main means and means for acquiring information in nature and production fields, have been widely used in all walks of life.

In the medical field, sensors also play an extremely important role. At present, according to relevant news, researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a new type of wearable sensor that uses silver nanowires to monitor electrophysiological signals such as electrocardiogram or electromyogram. This new sensor is as accurate as the "wet electrode" sensor used in the hospital, but it can also be used for long-term monitoring and is more accurate than the existing sensors when the patient is in motion.

Sensors for long-term monitoring of electrocardiograms and electromyograms

Long-term monitoring of electrophysiological signals can be used to track patient health or assist with medical research. It can also be used to develop new powered prostheses that respond to muscle signals in patients.

Electrophysiological sensors are used in hospitals, such as electrocardiograms, and the use of wet electrodes relies on an electrolytic gel between the sensor and the patient's skin to improve the sensor's ability to collect electrical signals from the body. However, this technology raises the issue of long-term monitoring technology because the dry gel will irritate the patient's skin and make the sensor inaccurate.

The new nanowire sensor is comparable to a wet sensor in terms of signal quality, and it is a "dry" electrode - it does not use a gel layer and therefore does not pose the same problems as a wet sensor.

"People have developed other dry electrodes in the past few years, and some of them have proven to compete with wet electrodes, but our new electrodes have better signal quality than most of them - for existing dry electrodes It is more accurate.” Dr. Zhu Yong said that a paper by a professor and senior author of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of North Carolina described this work. "In addition, our electrodes have physical toughness because nanowires are embedded in polymers."

The sensor is derived from the highly conductive elastic conductor created by Zhu early through silver nanowires and consists of a layer of nanowires within the retractable polymer.

The new sensor is also more accurate than the prior art in monitoring the electrophysiological signals of the patient.

"The silver nanowire sensor fits the patient's skin and creates close contact," said Dr. Zhu Yong. "Because the nanowires are so flexible, the sensor maintains close contact with the skin even when the patient is in motion. The nanowires also have high electrical conductivity, which is the key to high signal quality."

The new sensor is also compatible with standard electrocardiogram and cardiogram reading devices.

"I think these sensors are essentially ready to be used. The raw materials for sensors can be comparable to existing wet sensors in terms of cost, but we are still exploring ways to improve the manufacturing process to reduce overall costs."
