**Abstract:**
Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, has recently issued instructions emphasizing the importance of thrift and opposing waste. These directives were made in response to a report from Xinhua News Agency titled "Netizens Call for Curbing Waste on the Plate." The article highlighted the alarming levels of food waste across the catering industry, which has drawn strong public concern, especially regarding wasteful practices in official and public settings.
The General Secretary emphasized that the widespread existence of such behaviors is not only distressing but also inconsistent with the values of the Chinese nation. He called for increased awareness and promotion of the traditional virtues of diligence and frugality, encouraging people to embrace the idea that saving is honorable and waste is shameful. All levels of party and government institutions, as well as state-owned enterprises, are urged to lead by example, strictly enforce regulations on official receptions, and put an end to the misuse of public funds.
In January, the General Office of the CPC Central Committee issued a notice urging all localities and departments to fully understand the urgency of combating waste and to take effective measures to implement these important instructions. The central leadership’s clear stance reflects its deep concern for the people and its commitment to improving people's livelihoods through more responsible and sustainable practices.
The call for thrift has sparked widespread responses across the country. From the northeast to the southwest, and from the high plateaus to the southern regions, officials and the public have begun to take action. Many local governments have already started implementing stricter policies, such as simplifying meetings and reducing unnecessary expenditures. For instance, the Beijing Municipal Government’s recent session was conducted with minimal expenses, without banners or extravagant decorations, and with simpler meals for delegates.
Wang Hongzhong, head of Mentougou District in Beijing, praised the changes, saying that the new approach has eased the burden on grassroots staff, allowing them to focus more on real work rather than ceremonial tasks. In Shanghai, many government agencies have canceled informal receptions, and officials welcomed the move as a positive step toward greater efficiency and transparency.
Across provinces like Liaoning, Yunnan, Guizhou, Shaanxi, and Guangdong, party members and cadres have expressed support for the initiative, noting that wasteful spending not only consumes resources but also distracts from important policy discussions and problem-solving. At the recent provincial sessions in Liaoning, delegates were required to attend buffet-style dinners and were not allowed to eat outside the meeting venue, promoting a culture of simplicity and discipline.
These efforts reflect a broader shift in mindset, where thrift is no longer just a slogan but a practical and necessary approach to governance and daily life. As the central government continues to push for lasting change, it is hoped that the spirit of frugality will become deeply embedded in society, benefiting both the economy and the people.
