304L stainless steel tube, known as S30403 in the American AISI and ASTM standards, is a widely used type of austenitic stainless steel. It follows the international stainless steel classification system and is commonly referred to as 00Cr19Ni10 in China. The key difference between 304L and standard 304 stainless steel lies in its lower carbon content, which significantly improves its resistance to intergranular corrosion, especially after welding or stress relief treatments. This makes it ideal for applications where structural integrity and corrosion resistance are critical.

The chemical composition of 304L stainless steel includes a maximum of 0.03% carbon, 8–12% nickel, and 18–20% chromium. Other elements such as manganese (≤2.0%), silicon (≤1.0%), sulfur (≤0.030%), and phosphorus (≤0.035%) are also present in controlled amounts. This balanced composition ensures excellent formability, weldability, and general corrosion resistance under normal conditions.

Compared to regular 304 steel, 304L offers better performance in environments where grain boundary corrosion is a concern. Its low carbon content minimizes the risk of sensitization during high-temperature operations, making it suitable for use in a wide range of temperatures—from -196°C up to 800°C. It is commonly used in chemical processing, petrochemical, and coal industries, particularly in equipment exposed to corrosive media. Additionally, it's often found in architectural components, heat-resistant parts, and areas where post-weld heat treatment is not feasible.
