Historically, classical hermeneutics viewed the "understanding of the text," "interpretation of the text," and "the use of the text" as three essential elements of comprehension, with a particular emphasis on the "use" element, which was seen as the ultimate goal and purpose of interpretation.
However, Romantic thinkers merged understanding and interpretation, placing greater focus on the interpretive process itself and diminishing the importance of application. As a result, the "use of the text" became less relevant in their framework. Unlike them, Gadamer did not aim to return to a rigid separation of these three elements. Instead, he argued that they are dialectically connected and interdependent. On page 330, he emphasizes that application is an integral part of all understanding, just as understanding is always interpreted. In other words, the act of interpreting is inseparable from its practical use.
"The solution is always used." This statement reflects Gadamer’s belief that interpretation is not just about grasping meaning, but also about applying it in real-life contexts. The process of understanding is dynamic and evolves through continuous engagement with the text. Therefore, the role of "use" is not secondary or optional—it is fundamental to the entire hermeneutic process. Without application, understanding remains abstract and disconnected from reality. Gadamer's approach thus redefines the relationship between interpretation and practice, emphasizing that true comprehension only occurs when it is put into action.
