Even if the mask filters out harmful gases, the reduced oxygen content may still make it impossible for the user to breathe normally, posing a serious risk.
2. Not Effective Against Smoke Poisoning
Filter-type gas masks are only effective in areas where the concentration of toxic gases is below 2%. Fire scenes often involve high concentrations of smoke and toxic fumes, which exceed this limit. As a result, these masks cannot provide adequate protection in such conditions.
3. Limited Protection in Complex Environments
These masks are designed to filter specific types of toxins. However, fires can release a wide range of unknown and unpredictable substances. Due to their limited selectivity, filter masks may not protect against all hazardous materials present in a complex fire scene.
Given these limitations, filter-type gas masks are not suitable for use in firefighting operations. Instead, firefighters should rely on more advanced protective equipment, such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which provides full respiratory protection in dangerous environments.
