Dust Accumulation: A Hidden Challenge

In many photovoltaic (PV) projects, the issue of dust and ash buildup on solar panel surfaces is often overlooked. When left uncleaned, a thick layer of dust can accumulate naturally, significantly reducing the light transmittance through the panels. According to a dust test conducted at a 1MW-scale power plant, the energy output dropped by 7.6% when dust was present, compared to 9.3% in a clean state. This 1.7% efficiency loss highlights the serious impact of dust on performance. Moreover, if the dust accumulates over time, it can lead to corrosion of the glass cover, causing long-term damage and lowering the conversion efficiency of the PV modules permanently.

Traditional Solutions and Their Limitations

Operators of PV power plants have long recognized the effects of dust on system performance and have implemented various strategies to mitigate it. For instance, large ground-mounted solar farms in western regions often adopt a "solar-agriculture" model, where sprinklers are installed beneath the panels to spray water for cleaning. The same water is then used for irrigation, supporting crops or livestock, creating an integrated ecological production chain. In contrast, rooftop power stations in eastern areas typically rely on manual cleaning, with maintenance teams regularly wiping or flushing the panels to maintain optimal performance.

While technological solutions like automatic dust removal systems or ionic coatings have been developed, they require extensive R&D and are still costly to implement on a large scale. As a result, these are not yet viable for widespread use in conventional setups.

Traditionally, water in the west and labor in the east are both expensive resources. Finding a balance between improving power generation efficiency and controlling costs remains a key challenge for PV plant operators.

A Unique and Intelligent Strategy

Software plays a crucial role in modern solar power plants—not just as the "eyes" that monitor performance, but also as the "brain" that helps operators analyze problems and make informed decisions. It acts as an "alarm system," alerting maintenance staff to take timely action when dust accumulation affects panel efficiency.

According to research from industry experts, setting a reasonable alarm threshold based on the efficiency drop caused by dust accumulation can help identify when cleaning is needed. These alerts are logged along with the cleaning results, providing a detailed record over months, quarters, and years. This data-driven approach allows operators to evaluate the economic benefits of cleaning efforts versus the associated costs, helping them find the optimal balance for long-term performance and profitability.
