Dust Accumulation Problem

In many photovoltaic (PV) projects, dust accumulation on the surface of solar panels is often overlooked. As a result, the panels are not regularly cleaned, leading to a thick layer of dust that reduces light transmittance and significantly impacts energy output. According to a dust test conducted at a 1MW-scale power station, the efficiency dropped from 9.3% in a clean state to 7.6% when dust was present—a difference of 1.7%. This clearly shows how dust can negatively affect PV performance.

When dust accumulates over time, it not only hinders electricity generation but also poses a risk of corrosion if the dust contains acidic or alkaline components. This can lead to irreversible damage to the glass cover of the panels, reducing their long-term efficiency and lifespan.

Traditional Solutions

PV plant operators are aware of the impact of dust and have implemented various measures. For instance, large ground-mounted solar farms in the western regions often use a "solar-agriculture" model, where sprinklers are installed beneath the panels to spray water for cleaning. The same water is then used for irrigation, supporting crops and even livestock, creating a sustainable ecological cycle. In the eastern region, roof-top PV systems typically rely on manual cleaning. Trained personnel regularly wipe or flush the panels to maintain optimal performance. However, these methods come with high labor costs, especially in areas where water and manpower are expensive resources.

Some technological solutions have also emerged, such as automatic dust-cleaning systems and ion-coated panels that reduce dust adhesion. While promising, these technologies require significant R&D investment and are currently too costly for widespread adoption.

A Novel and Intelligent Approach

Software plays a crucial role in modern solar power plants, acting as more than just a monitoring tool. It functions as the "eye," helping operators detect issues; the "brain," guiding them in solving problems; and the "alarm system," alerting maintenance teams to take timely action.

Through extensive research, institutions have developed a smart approach by setting reasonable alarm thresholds based on the efficiency loss caused by dust accumulation. When the panel's conversion efficiency drops below a certain level, the system automatically alerts the relevant personnel to perform cleaning. All cleaning activities and results are recorded monthly, quarterly, and annually, allowing for a comprehensive analysis of the economic benefits versus the cost of maintenance. This ensures the best balance between energy output and operational expenses.

This intelligent strategy not only improves efficiency but also enhances the sustainability and profitability of photovoltaic power plants in the long run.
