The robotic precision reducer market, long dominated by foreign players, is now witnessing a new challenger from Wuhan. On July 20th, Yu Yunqing, the general manager of Wuhan Essence Reducer Manufacturing Co., Ltd., announced that their independently developed precision reducer has just passed rigorous testing and is expected to replace imported models, significantly lowering the cost of industrial robot localization in China.
On July 11th, the Wuhan Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute released an inspection report confirming that the company’s RV joint reducer met all required standards. This marks a major breakthrough for Hubei Province in the development of key components for industrial robots, signaling a shift in the industry's landscape.
Industrial robots rely on three core components: the reducer, control system, and servo motor. The reducer functions similarly to a car’s transmission, increasing power by reducing speed. There are three main types of speed reducers used in robotics: planetary, harmonic, and RV. While planetary reducers are suitable for simpler robotic applications, RV reducers are essential for high-end, articulated robots—used in advanced manufacturing and automation.
According to an expert with decades of experience in robotics, over 80% of the global RV reducer market is controlled by a handful of Japanese and South Korean companies, such as Tsubakimoto and Sumitomo. These companies have long held a dominant position due to the complexity involved in designing and manufacturing these components. The precision required is extremely high, with tolerances so small that even minor errors can affect performance. Many parts are rigid or flexible, making the production process highly challenging.
China has traditionally relied on imports for these critical components, often paying two to three times more than what Japanese manufacturers charge. However, this is beginning to change. With the growing demand for industrial robots in China—doubling in recent years—over 100 companies, both inside and outside the province, have entered the precision reducer market.
Among them, Wuhan Fenjin Power and Hubei Planetary Company are notable players. However, only Nantong Zhenkang recently announced the successful development of its own RV reducer, marking a significant milestone in domestic innovation.
Yu Yunqing highlighted that the rise of Chinese brands is starting to challenge the long-standing dominance of foreign firms. As a result, foreign companies have begun to lower their prices in response to increased competition. In Wuhan, the price of the domestically produced reducer is about 30% lower than that of Japanese counterparts, attracting interest from major Chinese robot manufacturers like Anhui Efte. This trend suggests that the future of the precision reducer market may be increasingly shaped by local innovation and affordability.
