The robotic precision reducer market, long dominated by foreign players, is now seeing a new challenger from Wuhan. On July 20th, Yu Yunqing, the general manager of Wuhan Essence Reducer Manufacturing Co., Ltd., announced that an independently developed precision reducer has just passed rigorous testing and is expected to replace imported models, significantly reducing the cost of industrial robot localization.
On July 11th, the Wuhan Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Institute released an inspection report confirming that the company’s RV joint reducer met all required standards. This marks a major breakthrough for Hubei Province in developing core components for industrial robots, signaling a shift in the domestic manufacturing landscape.
Industrial robots rely on three key components: the reducer, control system, and servo motor. The reducer functions similarly to a car’s gearbox, converting high-speed, low-torque input into lower-speed, high-torque output—essential for precise movement and power transmission.
According to a seasoned robotics expert, there are three main types of speed reducers: planetary, harmonic, and RV. Planetary reducers are typically used in simpler robotic systems, while RV reducers are critical for high-end, multi-jointed robots. Globally, over 80% of the market is controlled by a handful of companies such as Japan’s Teijin and Sumitomo, along with South Korean firms.
Reports indicate that gearboxes and bearings form the core of the reducer, but their design and manufacturing require advanced engineering expertise. Some parts are rigid, others flexible, and the precision required is extremely high—often within a fraction of a human hair. China has historically lacked this technology, forcing reliance on expensive imports, often priced two to three times higher than Japanese alternatives.
With the rapid growth of the robotics industry in China, demand has doubled in recent years. Over 100 companies, both inside and outside Hubei, have entered the precision reducer market, including Wuhan Fenjin Power and Hubei Planetary Company. However, only Nantong Zhenkang has successfully developed an RV reducer, making it one of the few domestic players to break through.
Yu Yunqing noted that the rise of domestic brands is challenging the dominance of foreign manufacturers. In response, foreign companies have started lowering their prices. For instance, the price of the product in Wuhan is now 30% lower than that of Japanese counterparts, attracting interest from major Chinese robot manufacturers like Anhui Efte. This development signals a promising shift toward self-reliance in China’s robotics sector.
