Classification of External Wall Insulation Materials by Material Shape:
1. Loose Insulation Materials: These include substances like slag, expanded vermiculite, mineral wool, rock wool, expanded perlite, sawdust, and rice husks. They are typically used in areas where vibration is minimal and the structural envelope does not require rigid support. However, they are not ideal for applications that involve frequent movement or stress.
2. Board-Type Insulation Materials: This category includes materials such as mineral wool boards, slate, foam plastic boards, cork boards, and fiberboards made from organic materials like wood, particle board, straw board, and sugarcane board. Some of these are synthetic materials like polyester or rubber-based products. In addition to foam concrete slabs, they combine the benefits of loose insulation with easier handling and installation, making them more suitable for direct application on exterior walls.
3. Monolithic Insulation Materials: These are created by mixing loose insulation materials with a binding agent and then pouring or spraying them onto the surface. Examples include vermiculite concrete, expanded perlite concrete, fly ash ceramsite concrete, clay ceramsite concrete, pumice concrete, slag concrete, and others. These materials maintain some characteristics of their original loose form, offer excellent structural integrity, and are generally easy to apply. Most of them are classified as Class A non-combustible insulation materials, making them a safe choice for building envelopes.
