New end mill for roughing of molds

According to the Nikkei BP News Agency, Japan’s Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric Hard Metal (Headquarters: Hyogo and Itami City) added a groove for the mold and mechanical parts in the “GS MILL” series jointly developed by the two parties. The end mill "GS MILL Roughing", which is roughed on the side, was launched on April 21, 2006. There are 7 models in the entire product line with diameters between 6.0 and 12.0mm. It can be used for cutting materials such as mild steel, carbon steel, pre-hardened steel and die steel with Rockwell hardness of 50HRc.

By using a peripheral blade shape that is most suitable for roughing, the cutting resistance is reduced by 30% compared to the past. In this way, a feed rate of up to 1.5 times is achieved compared to the past super-end end mills.

The tool material is a particulate superhard alloy with high hardness and toughness at high temperature. As the cut resistance is improved, the life expectancy is approximately doubled. In addition, a coating treatment is performed to improve both smoothness and frictional resistance. By speeding up the discharge of the chips, the cutting heat of the cutting edge and the cutting workpiece is reduced, and the efficiency is increased by about three times.

The two companies plan to exhibit this end mill at the 17th Mold Processing Technology Exhibition (INTERMOLD 2006) held in Index Osaka from April 12th to 15th, 2006.
