Scientists develop a "cold tube" refrigeration system that consumes only half of the air conditioner

According to foreign media New Atlas, air conditioning is a convenient way to cool offices and homes, but it consumes a lot of energy in the process. A team of scientists has recently developed an alternative solution called "Cold Tube". Its working principle is to absorb the heat emitted by the human body, so it can use about half of the energy of the traditional system.

The research team has been studying next-generation systems, hoping to keep people cool in a more effective way. The team is composed of scientists from the University of British Columbia, Princeton University, University of California, Berkeley, and Singapore-ETH Research Center. The team aims at the dehumidification process as a key function of today's air conditioning systems.

"The working principle of air conditioning is to cool and dehumidify the air around us-this is an expensive and not particularly environmentally friendly proposition," explained Adam Rysanek, project co-leader from the University of British Columbia. "The working principle of Cold Tube is to absorb the heat directly emitted by human radiation without cooling the air passing through the skin. This achieves a lot of energy savings."

The system uses heat energy from a hotter surface to be naturally attracted by radiation to a colder surface, through the array of rectangular walls or ceiling panels, and cold water passing through them. These boards are wrapped by a novel membrane that is airtight and repels moisture to avoid accumulation of condensate.

At the same time, this layer of film allows radiation to pass through, that is, when a person stands next to or under the board, the body's heat will radiate to the cold board, creating a cool feeling, without the need to dehumidify the air. Last year, scientists tested the "cold tube" in Singapore. Most of the 55 participants who were invited to the test said that despite the temperature as high as 30°C, they still felt "cool" or "comfortable."

"Since Cold Tube can make people feel cool without dehumidifying the surrounding air, we can expect to eliminate up to 50% of the typical air conditioning energy consumption in the applicable space," said team member Eric Teitelbaum, who is in Singapore-ETH The research center supervised this demonstration while working.

The researchers said that the current "cold pipe" design makes it a solution for outdoor activities such as summer fairs, concerts and markets. But their ultimate goal is to continue to develop the system so that it can replace traditional air conditioning in homes and offices, where it may even provide some other benefits.

"Since Cold Tube works independently of indoor air temperature and humidity, it is possible to keep the windows open while still feeling comfortable in our increasingly hot summers," said Forrest Meggers of Princeton University, co-leader of the project. "Cold Tube can provide relief for different regions, from North American homes and offices that currently rely on standard HVAC systems, to developing economies that foresee large amounts of cooling in the next half century."

The research paper describing the "cold tube" was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
