Japanese study found that the beryllite mine can efficiently convert thermal energy into electrical energy

Japan's Hokuriku University of Science and Technology issued a communique on the 15th, saying that a study conducted by the school showed that the beryllium copper mine containing common elements such as copper and sulfur can efficiently convert heat energy into electricity. This achievement is expected to promote the utilization of waste heat in factories and realize new environmentally friendly thermoelectric power generation.

Thermoelectric power generation refers to a power generation technology that allows an object to generate a temperature difference and converts the heat flow generated by the temperature difference directly into electrical energy. This type of power generation has received attention because it can effectively use waste heat. However, substances that were previously considered to be expected to convert heat energy into electrical energy often contain lead and rare elements that are toxic to the human body. Therefore, their practical application faces significant obstacles.

Tantalum copper is a kind of sulfur salt mineral containing common elements such as copper, iron, zinc and silver with low toxicity. Researchers at the Graduate School of Science and Technology at Hokuriku University of Science and Technology at the Hokuriku University and the Institute of Physical Chemistry have synthesized compounds that have the same structure as the natural beryllite deposit. They found that about 7% of the heat energy can be converted into electricity after heating one end of the substance to approximately 400 degrees Celsius and cooling the other end to room temperature.

The researchers pointed out that this is the higher conversion efficiency obtained in the experiments conducted to date for lead-free compounds, which is closely related to the property of beryllium copper that is not easily thermally conductive.

The related papers of this achievement have been published in the online edition of the American Journal of Applied Physics. (Reporter Lan Jianzhong)
