New Smart Car: Using Laser and Camera Navigation

According to foreign media reports, Oxford University recently launched a new type of automatic driving system that adopts a completely different technology than Google’s self-driving cars. This smart car is called RobotCarUK. It has a 3D laser scanner and a camera on the front of the car to acquire map data to compare with the surrounding environment.

If the smart car thinks that it can automatically drive in the current environment after comparing maps, it will inform the driver through the iPad installed on the dashboard. At present, this system is applied to the NissanLeaf model of Nissan Motors and has been tested at a speed of 40 mph.

"This car is not completely automatic," Professor Paul Newman told the British Guardian. "But it knows when it's safe and when it's at risk, then it helps the driver."

Unlike Google's smart car system, RobotCarUK does not use GPS and can only function in its familiar environment. For those office workers who travel the same distance every day, this car is very suitable. “Our cities have not changed much,” Newman said. “So a robotic car will often meet a familiar road and say to the driver, 'I understand this road. Do you want me to drive?'”

RobotCarUK has some advantages over Google’s driverless cars. The cost of building a smart car at the current state of technology is around 5,000 pounds (about US$7,760), but Oxford University's smart car R&D team hopes to reduce this figure to 100 pounds (about $155) in the future.

From a technical point of view, this smart driving system is more practical, so it is not too difficult to get permission to get on the road in the future. "At present, there is no clear law that this type of car can not hit the road," Newman said. "Actually, this should be a more advanced driver assistance system."
