U.S. University of Utah designed a multicolor thin layer to enhance photovoltaic cell efficiency

Researchers from the University of Utah have made a breakthrough in solar technology by developing a multicolor thin layer that enhances light absorption. This transparent layer, integrated into the cover of solar panels, has the potential to boost the overall efficiency of solar cells to as high as 50%. Unlike traditional solar cells, which can only capture a narrow range of light wavelengths, this new design allows for broader light absorption, significantly improving energy conversion. The research was led by Rajesh Menon, an assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering, along with graduate student Peng Wang. They created a multicolor layer that enables photovoltaic cells to absorb more wavelengths, increasing their efficiency by 16%. To test their concept, the team built a multicolor computer simulator placed on a solar cell with eight different absorber layers. The results showed a theoretical efficiency improvement of up to 50%. Menon explained that the multicolor layer is designed to direct specific colors of light to the appropriate parts of the solar cell, enhancing performance without adding significant costs. The layer measures 10 mm in length and 50 mm in width, featuring a 3-micron groove that reflects incoming light. It's manufactured using theoretical photolithography, but the process is cost-effective—essentially creating a multi-color mold and stamping it out like a DVD. Looking ahead, the University of Utah plans to collaborate with solar panel manufacturers to bring these high-efficiency cells to market within the next 5 to 10 years. Additionally, Menon and his team aim to test their technology at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, further validating its potential in real-world applications.
