"How to Choose Stair Treads
Stair treads, also known as steel ladder treads or ladder grating treads, are specialized grating plates designed for use on steel ladders. Depending on the installation method, they typically come in two types: welded and bolted. These treads are primarily intended for use on steel ladders, so they're often referred to as stair tread plates.
(1) Based on how they’re installed, stair treads can be either welded or bolted. Welded treads are the standard type, where the tread is directly welded onto the ladder structure. Bolted treads require additional 65x5mm flat steel side plates to be attached to the steel grating.
(2) Depending on whether they have anti-slip features, there are two main categories: tread plates with front guards (often featuring patterned or grooved steel) and those without. For safety reasons, we recommend using tread plates with front guards. There are four primary types of stair treads: T1, T2, T3, and T4.
The T1 tread is the most basic and cost-effective option. It’s constructed with load-bearing flat steel and crossbars spaced at specific intervals. This type is typically welded to the grating and then hot-dip galvanized. Its affordability makes it popular among customers looking for a budget-friendly solution.
The T2 tread is similar to the T1 but includes side plates that are bolted on both ends. This design makes it easier to install, particularly on steel ladders.
The T3 tread builds upon the T1 design by adding a protective front guard in the flat steel direction. The anti-slip front guard is usually made from patterned steel, enhancing the tread's slip-resistance.
The T4 tread combines the best of both worlds—offering both anti-slip front guards and installation slots. The welded version is permanently fixed to the ladder beam, making it durable but less flexible when it comes to removal. The bolted version requires thicker side plates with holes for direct bolt fixation, allowing for easy disassembly and reuse. Customers can customize these treads based on their needs, choosing from various steel grating options to fit different stair dimensions.
