Understanding the characteristics, technical parameters, and specifications of the tube is essential for proper usage. For reverse characteristic testing, connect the red probe of the multimeter to the positive terminal of the braided tube and the black probe to the negative terminal. If the needle points to infinity or nearly infinity, the tube is considered functional. During forward characteristic testing, place the black probe (which acts as the positive terminal on the meter) on the positive side of the braided tube, and the red probe (acting as the negative terminal) on the negative side. If the needle doesn't move to zero but stops somewhere in the middle of the dial, this reading represents the forward resistance. The lower the forward resistance, the better the performance. A forward resistance of zero indicates a short circuit, while a resistance close to infinity suggests an open circuit—both conditions render the tube unusable. As a switching element, the braided tube exhibits low resistance under forward voltage, allowing it to conduct electricity like a closed switch. Under reverse voltage, its resistance becomes very high, effectively acting as an open switch. This switching behavior enables the creation of various logic circuits. When detecting a braided tube, you can also test it using a radio. Some braided tubes are used in the tuner of a television set, where they help adjust the frequency. Additionally, variable-capacity braided tubes are often found in tuning circuits. Another key function of the braided tube is as a limiting element. After being forward-biased, the voltage drop across the tube remains relatively constant (around 0.7V for silicon tubes and 0.3V for germanium tubes). This stability allows the tube to be used as a limiter in circuits, helping to restrict signal amplitude within a specific range. Moreover, braided tubes are used as flyback diodes in switching power supplies and inductive loads such as relays. They help protect other components by providing a path for back-EMF generated when the circuit is turned off.
