Introduction to lifting machinery

Most cranes operate by first positioning themselves horizontally or vertically, and then using hydraulic lifts to raise the load once the spreader has secured the material. Once the crane reaches its destination, it unloads the cargo, and the system repositions itself to return to the original location for another cycle. This process involves repeated lifting, moving, and unloading, with each part of the operation happening in sequence. The mechanisms involved in lifting are typically not continuously active but work in intervals during different stages of the process.

Lifting machinery is primarily used to move individual items, but it can also be adapted for bulk materials like coal, ore, or grain when equipped with specialized tools such as grabs. For liquid materials like molten steel, containers or buckets can be attached to the lifting device. In addition, some lifting systems, such as elevators, are designed to transport people safely. In certain industries, lifting equipment serves as the main operational machine—like cranes at ports or train stations that handle heavy loads on a daily basis. These machines are essential for efficient material handling and play a critical role in logistics and industrial operations.
