Classic French Country Kitchen
When it came to designing a French Country kitchen in Brookville, New York, the designer drew inspiration from a touch of French history and added a modern twist. Designer Ken Kelly of Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly, Inc. crafted a French Country kitchen using an exquisite selection of Bentwood cabinetry, faucets, and countertops. The authentic door designs, custom finishes, accessories, and intricate details—were the result of extensive collaboration with Jack Arnold, one of America's leading French Country architects.
The stunning Bentwood cabinetry was inspired by one of the most enduring traditions in French furniture history. During the French Revolution in 1789, the monarchy of King Louis XVI was overthrown. For the next fifteen tumultuous years, three other regimes—the Republic, the Directoire, and the Consulat—rose and fell rapidly. For cabinetmakers, the ornate styles associated with the French monarchs became outdated. A new style emerged, known as Directoire, named after the elected governments of that era. Created out of necessity and a desire for simplicity, the Directoire style embraced minimalism and austerity. While the basic geometric shapes of Louis XVI furniture remained, the silhouettes were cleaner and more streamlined. Reflecting France’s shift away from the extravagance of the royal court, colors became muted, and decoration was kept to a minimum.
A color scheme of black, green, and off-white set the tone for the kitchen’s aesthetic. For the cabinets, Ken combined four distinct door styles. Avignon, featuring a diamond pattern, solid raised panel. Rochelle, with its square-shaped middle panel and clipped corners. Toulouse, showcasing a raised pyramidal center panel with applied molding—and Cassis, a decorative X-shaped mullion door paired with dove wire, which has smaller holes than chicken wire.
Behind the stove, a hand-painted mural graces the porcelain backsplash. The Waterstone Traditional Wall Mounted Pot Filler and American Bronze finish add both functionality and style to the cooking area. The designers included an exposed interior spice shelf on the hood for easy access. The countertops are a unique blend of granite and cherry chopping blocks. The sink area boasts more Waterstone Faucet products. A Towson Kitchen Faucet with matching Hot and Cold Filtration Faucet, soap dispenser, and side spray—all finished in American Bronze. The step-up eating bar features a built-in entertainment sink and a Waterstone Bar Faucet for drinks and ice.
For the SubZero refrigerator and freezer, Ken Kelly designed an armoire-style configuration with ornate storage and panels. The distinctive wainscoting panels, door casings, and crown moldings complement the French Country cabinetry collection beautifully. Ken’s creative process culminated in a remarkable kitchen design that exudes character, sensible design, and subtle elegance.
