The Ministry of Science and Technology recently announced significant progress in the development of high-energy lithium-ion battery systems and battery pack technologies. The project focuses on the advancement of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode materials, with extensive research conducted on raw materials and cell design techniques. This includes testing and evaluation of domestic LFP cathode materials, as well as the development of aluminum foil coating technology and diaphragm layering techniques.
Looking ahead, lithium-ion batteries are expected to play a key role in power tools, e-bikes, new energy vehicles, and energy storage systems. These sectors are anticipated to experience exponential growth in the coming years, which will further drive demand for lithium-ion batteries.
One of the major challenges facing lithium-ion batteries is the need for more advanced packaging solutions. Although these batteries offer high energy density and long cycle life, they face difficulties in large-scale production due to strict packaging requirements and high costs. A common issue is battery uniformity—when one cell fails, it can significantly reduce the lifespan of the entire battery pack, sometimes by as much as 90%.
In terms of global competition, China, Japan, and South Korea dominate the industry, accounting for over 90% of global output. Japan and South Korea lead due to their technological advantages. In China, since 2010, the growing maturity of lithium-ion batteries in power applications has led to a clear replacement effect on traditional secondary batteries. The overall industry has maintained a growth rate of over 30%. In 2012, driven by new energy vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics like tablets, the market size increased by 40.1% year-on-year to 55.68 billion yuan. China’s lithium-ion battery production reached about 4 billion units, up 33% from the previous year.
Currently, China’s lithium-ion battery industry is mainly concentrated in the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan regions. The Pearl River Delta alone accounts for about 35% of national output. Experts predict that industrial relocation will intensify, with upstream material production remaining in eastern regions while downstream assembly shifts toward central and western provinces. Power batteries have seen upgrades, leading to industry concentration in traditional auto cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Hefei, and Guangdong. High-end material production requires significant investment, so regions like Beijing, Jiangsu, and Shanghai will continue to lead. Meanwhile, resource-rich areas such as Sichuan, Yichun, Tibet, and Qinghai are expected to develop into battery material clusters.
Lithium-ion batteries also show great potential in communication backup systems. As the number of base stations increases, the demand for stable and reliable backup power is rising. Lead-acid batteries typically last 4–6 years, but lithium-ion batteries offer longer life, better environmental performance, and a smaller footprint. Operators are increasingly adopting lithium batteries for base station energy storage. With decreasing costs, the use of lithium batteries in this sector is expected to grow significantly.
In 2012, the push for new energy vehicles and energy storage systems led to increased investments by major manufacturers, with growth rates expected to remain above 25% in the coming years. The communication backup battery market is projected to reach around 4.5 billion yuan, with the replacement market valued at approximately 1 billion yuan. This highlights the growing importance of lithium-ion batteries in both new and existing infrastructure.
