A bucket elevator is a crucial piece of equipment used to vertically transport granular and powdered materials such as limestone, coal, gypsum, clinker, dry clay, raw materials, cement, and coal dust. It is commonly used in industrial applications where materials need to be lifted from one level to another efficiently.
Bucket elevators are classified into three main types based on the unloading method: centrifugal discharge, gravity discharge, and hybrid discharge. Centrifugal unloading features a high-speed bucket movement, making it ideal for fine powders, small particles, and abrasive materials. Gravity discharge, on the other hand, operates at a slower speed and is more suitable for heavy, blocky, and dense materials like limestone and clinker. Hybrid discharge combines both methods, offering flexibility for various material types.
The traction components of a bucket elevator can include chains, plate chains, or belts. Chain-driven systems are known for their durability and strong connection with the buckets, although they tend to be heavier and may experience more wear when handling highly abrasive materials. Plate chains are lighter and stronger, making them ideal for high-capacity lifting, but their hinge joints are prone to wear over time. Belt-driven systems, typically made of rubber, are simpler in design but less suitable for materials with high abrasiveness. Specialized belts, such as clamp steel belts and heat-resistant belts, can handle higher temperatures, with some capable of operating up to 250°C.
The working principle of a bucket elevator involves the buckets picking up material from a lower bin or hopper. As the conveyor belt or chain moves upward, the buckets reach the top, where they rotate around the head pulley and then descend, discharging the material into a receiving chute. In belt-driven models, the rubber belt is mounted on drive rollers and redirecting pulleys. In chain-driven models, two parallel chains are connected to sprockets at the top or bottom, allowing for smooth and controlled movement.
To prevent dust and material spillage during operation, most bucket elevators are equipped with protective covers or organic shells. This ensures a cleaner and safer working environment.
