Rainy days, home appliances should be protected from moisture

In today's hot and humid weather, discomfort is not the only issue. This kind of climate can also be harmful to household appliances. Even if they don't get directly damaged by moisture, they can become breeding grounds for bacteria, which can negatively affect your health. Therefore, it's crucial to take care of your appliances during such seasons. For example, a TV exposed to high humidity might experience issues like "no picture, only sound," and this can significantly reduce its lifespan. The internal circuits of electronic devices are usually enclosed spaces made of metal. If the temperature inside remains lower than the surrounding environment, condensation can occur, leading to tiny water droplets that are hard to spot with the naked eye. These droplets can cause short circuits, making them extremely dangerous. To maintain your TV in wet conditions, it's recommended to turn it on for 2-3 hours daily. The heat generated helps remove moisture from the casing and keeps the machine running smoothly. Alternatively, you can put the TV in standby mode, allowing its internal components to release heat and dry out any accumulated moisture. When no one is at home, it's best to unplug the TV, close the windows, and cover it with a cloth to protect it from humidity. Even though washing machines handle water regularly, they still need proper moisture protection. During summer, clothes washed in a washing machine may develop a musty smell, which is often a sign of mold growth due to dampness. Drum-type washing machines, in particular, have slower rotation speeds, which can lead to residue buildup if detergent isn't fully dissolved. This residue can stick to the drum and plastic parts, and during the rainy season, it becomes a perfect environment for mold and bad odors. To prevent moisture in your washing machine, always make sure the inner drum is dry after each use. For drum models, open the drain valve located at the lower right corner to eliminate any leftover water. Avoid placing the machine in areas with high humidity or exposure to corrosive gases and strong chemicals, as these can damage metal parts and reduce electrical insulation. Regular cleaning is also essential to keep everything functioning properly. Air conditioners are also vulnerable to moisture. Due to the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, condensation can form inside the ducts. When mixed with dust, this can accelerate the aging of components and plastics, and pose health risks. To keep your air conditioner dry, it's a good idea to run it occasionally—about 1-2 hours at a time—to ensure it stays in good working condition. After using the AC, switch it to ventilation mode to blow out any moisture and prevent mold growth. Cleaning the filter every 2-3 weeks is another important step. Make sure to dry the filter thoroughly after cleaning. Many people place their refrigerators against the wall, but this can actually be harmful. Walls, especially during the rainy season, tend to be damp. Moisture can seep through small gaps in the fridge, potentially damaging internal components. To avoid this, it's best to keep the refrigerator at least 10 cm away from the wall to allow proper airflow and ventilation. (Tian Liyuan)
