When it comes to home decoration, environmental considerations are naturally essential. One of the first steps is selecting products that are kind to the environment. If the methods used during production aren’t sustainable, they can still harm the environment. In the second phase of Red Star Macalline's "Green Investing in China" initiative, we visited a floor manufacturer where we saw how environmentally conscious household products are made. I also learned about several factors that influence the environmental performance and quality of household items. One crucial factor is the adhesive used in pressing and the paint applied for sealing and coloring. Formaldehyde is a major indoor pollutant, and among all decorative materials, bonding glues emit the highest levels of formaldehyde. During the production of floors, especially those requiring glue to attach the substrate and the surface layer, the type of glue used directly impacts the floor's environmental profile. At the living floor's parquet production plant, we observed that all floors are made using eco-friendly glue from a Finnish company. This glue ensures that the formaldehyde emissions in the pressed floors remain within the E1 grade limits. It cures quickly, bonds strongly, and can be cured at room temperature or high frequency. Importantly, it doesn't contain harmful substances like formaldehyde, phenol, or heavy metals, and has a long shelf life, making it suitable for bonding common tree species. A high solid content is a key feature of eco-friendly adhesives, ensuring both strong bonding and compliance with environmental standards. The paint used for sealing and coloring the floor is another critical factor in determining its environmental performance. When purchasing a floor, consumers should inquire whether the product is finished with eco-friendly paint. For edge-sealing paints, the benzene content is an ingredient to consider. Although benzene is harmful to humans, it evaporates quickly during the sealing and post-processing stages, minimizing health risks for consumers. To protect workers, factories implement specialized systems for handling and discharging sealing exhaust gases. Another significant aspect affecting floor performance is the wood's moisture content. Some readers have shared experiences of their solid wood floors cracking after just a year, despite proper care. In the production plant, we learned that the primary cause of cracking is the wood's moisture content. Wood naturally contains water, and the ratio of this water weight to the dried wood weight determines the moisture content. To ensure compatibility with local climates and environments, wood products undergo drying and curing processes based on regional moisture standards. This ensures the wood's moisture content aligns with the average atmospheric moisture levels in the usage area. Regional differences in atmospheric moisture content mean that wood products must meet varying moisture requirements. For instance, Beijing's average atmospheric moisture is 11.4%, whereas in southern regions, it's around 14%. According to experts, wood products should ideally have a moisture content slightly below the local average, such as one to two percentage points lower. For floor materials, the solid wood component in multi-layer solid wood composite floors is particularly important, as dimensional stability directly affects performance. In northern areas, to prevent cracking during the dry heating season, reputable brands select and rigorously inspect the surface veneers of their floors, ensuring precise moisture control before manufacturing qualified multi-layer parquet planks. After attaching the decorative veneer to the floor substrate, the slab undergoes high-pressure treatment, generating significant internal stresses. To stabilize the floor and avoid cracking or warping, the slabs are placed in specially controlled temperature and humidity rooms for about 20 days. This ensures the floor's quality remains consistent and durable over time. Overall, understanding these factors—adhesive types, paint choices, and moisture management—is vital for creating environmentally friendly and high-quality home products.
