But here’s an interesting twist: human sweat can affect the green color of emerald. Although the chromium in jade isn’t completely immobile, people often perceive the green as "growing." This happens because a small amount of chromium may slowly diffuse through the jade, especially in pieces that are worn close to the skin, such as bracelets and pendants.
Why does this happen? The most widely accepted explanation is that the human body generates heat and sweat, which contains acidic and alkaline components. These substances can seep into the jade through tiny cracks in the jewelry. They might react chemically with chromium ions or dissolve some of the previously stabilized chromium, causing it to move and make the green color appear larger and more vivid. In addition to the color change, the design of the jewelry might also look slightly different, though its value remains unaffected.
