Bahrain stone maintenance method

Bahrain stones are known for their vibrant red color, with the chicken blood variety being one of the most striking. Compared to Changhua Bloodstone, which has a thick and intense red tone, the Bahraini version offers a more delicate and vivid hue. Both types can experience color changes if not properly maintained, so it's important to avoid high temperatures and direct sunlight. If a stone does change color, soaking it in paraffin oil for a few days can restore its original vibrancy. However, some Tibetan collectors actually prefer this transformation, believing it enhances the stone’s "blood-activating" properties. Today, even the Kistler collection requires care and maintenance, just like any other valuable collectible. Proper preservation involves waxing the stone. This process not only brings out the natural patterns and textures but also gives the stone a warmer, more polished look. Before waxing, the stone should be cleaned thoroughly and heated. Small pieces can be boiled, while larger ones can be steamed or placed on a hot iron plate. In summer, exposing them to the sun is also an effective method. When using heat, ensure even distribution across the stone’s surface. After heating, allow the stone to cool slightly before applying wax. Use solid paraffin and gently press it against the warm stone until it melts. Once the wax is applied, let the stone cool completely, allowing the paraffin to harden. The temperature during waxing should be sufficient to melt the wax, but not too high to cause wrinkling. Apply just enough wax so that it is fully absorbed as it cools. If there's excess, wipe it off before cooling. If it's too much after cooling, reheat and reapply. Not all stones should be waxed. For example, certain rare Shoushan Stone varieties should not be treated this way, as it may alter their natural appearance. Additionally, Hibiscus Stone, known for its soft white tones, especially the "lard white" areas, should never be oiled. Oiling can cause yellowing and uneven coloration. Ancient collectors used to apply a small amount of oil to Furong Stone, but this was often referred to as "oil bubble hibiscus." Today, many collectors prefer to rub the stone gently with their hands or face to maintain its natural luster without adding oil. Each stone has its own unique characteristics, and understanding how to care for it is essential to preserving its beauty and value. Whether through waxing, oiling, or simple cleaning, proper maintenance ensures that these precious stones remain vibrant and cherished for generations.
