The temperature in the seedbed should not exceed 25°C. However, as summer approaches, outside temperatures often rise above 30°C, which is not favorable for celery growth. To combat this, farmers should implement measures such as shading and misting to keep the temperature under control. Second, thinning the seedlings is essential. When the plants have developed their first true leaves, it's time to remove overcrowded, diseased, or weak seedlings. Adjust the spacing to around 2–3 cm to allow for better air circulation and reduce competition for nutrients. At the same time, weeds should be removed from the field to improve the growing environment and promote healthier growth. Third, drainage is crucial. Summer brings frequent heavy rains, and poor drainage can lead to waterlogging, which is particularly harmful to celery. Since the roots of celery are delicate, proper drainage systems must be in place. Farmers should dig ditches around the seedbeds to ensure that excess water can drain away quickly after each rain, preventing root damage. Fourth, pest and disease prevention should not be overlooked. High humidity and warm temperatures create ideal conditions for diseases like damping-off and soft rot. Soft rot is a bacterial disease that causes the seedlings to rot and emit a foul odor. When humidity is high, these diseases can spread rapidly. Therefore, it's important to take preventive measures early on. Farmers should apply protective sprays such as 70% agricultural streptomycin diluted 3000 times, 3% zhongshengmycin at 1000 times, or 33% potassium oxonate at 800 times to control the spread of diseases effectively. By following these four key steps—temperature control, proper thinning, effective drainage, and timely disease prevention—farmers can significantly improve the health and survival rate of their celery seedlings, ensuring a successful harvest.
