Hidden killer in paint

In the current home renovation, many homes have fixed furniture and flooring installed. Generally, fixed furniture and flooring are mostly coated with polyurethane paint with fast drying and hard film. But you may not think that containing a large amount of free TDI in the fake polyurethane will cause great harm to the human body.

TDI is an abbreviation for toluene diisocyanate, which is mainly used in the manufacture of polyurethane materials, such as polyurethane paints and foams commonly used in home decoration. Whether it is the production or use of these materials, people are exposed to TDI that does not fully react and volatilize into the air. That's why we smell a strong irritating taste when using certain polyurethane paints.

High levels of free TDI are a toxic substance that primarily produces toxic effects on the respiratory system. When free TDI is inhaled into the respiratory tract, people may cause symptoms such as cough and chest tightness, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, it may cause pulmonary edema and coma, and even death. In addition, free TDI can also cause irritation to the eyes, and chemical conjunctival inflammation such as painful tears and conjunctival hyperemia. When this chemical touches the skin, it also produces red pimples, contact skin allergies and other symptoms. Long-term exposure to TDI may lead to cancer.

TDI is easily vaporized and volatilized. When the polyurethane paint is applied, the free TDI in the paint will slowly evaporate into the air. According to the Chemical Safety Card jointly prepared by the International Chemical Safety Programme (IPCS) and the European Community (CEC), the concentration of TDI in air is 0.036 mg/m3. Long-term exposure to free TDI above this concentration may result in death.

At present, China's TDI content of polyurethane paint is specified as such, first-class products should be less than 2%, quality products are not controlled without standards, while foreign countries stipulate that free TDI cannot be higher than 0.5%. Some paint manufacturers have drilled looser national regulations to produce paints containing large amounts of free TDI, some even reaching 3% to 7%.

This kind of polyurethane paint containing a large amount of free TDI not only causes harm to the human body, but also chemically reacts with the latex paint to make the wall surface unevenly yellow, affecting the appearance and decorative effect.

In order to avoid the physical damage to you and your family, the decorative effect can be achieved satisfactorily, you should choose the furniture produced by the furniture factory. The paint film of these furniture is dried and the free TDI has been fully volatilized. If you have customized the furniture during the decoration, do not carry out the construction of the latex paint and the polyurethane paint at the same time. Wait for one of them to be fully dried before carrying out another construction. In addition, you should not stay in the hotel immediately after the renovation, but you should open the window to the new home every day, and then move to a new home after the irritating taste is gone.
