n-PERT solar cell innovation efficiency up to 22.02%

The European IMEC R&D Center achieved a new conversion efficiency record of 22.02% for N-type single-crystal silicon passivated reversal-polarized fully diffused batteries (n-PERT) through the use of commercial wafer processing equipment. This new technology has been calibrated in the ISE calibration laboratory with an open circuit voltage of 684mV, a short circuit current of 39.9mA/cm2, and a fill factor of 80.7%.

IMEC claims that it uses a laser doping method on the front of the cell surface to improve the open circuit voltage and short circuit current, thereby obtaining a new efficiency record. The battery technology uses Meco's industrial electroplating tool, which passes through a passivation stack and then metalized laser ablation to make the battery's nickel/copper/silver contact. The passivation stack thereafter contains a thin (<10 nm) ALD deposited aluminum oxide layer.

The n-PRET solar cell industry offers high battery efficiency and a competitive cost structure. Filip Duerinckx, IMEC's n-PRET platform manager, said that this battery technology simplifies the production process while achieving new efficiency records, and believes that this technology can be brought to market in a short period of time.
