China University of Science and Technology made progress in the research of porous organic polymer ion membrane materials

Recently, Xu Tongwen, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of China, teamed up with international colleagues to make new progress in the research of porous organic polymer ion membrane materials. For the first time, an anion exchange membrane material with a microporous structure was prepared. The results of this study are published in "Applied Chemistry in Germany" on August 9 (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 2016, DOI: 10.1002/anie.201605916). The first author of the paper was postdoctoral researcher Yang Zhengjin.

The research of anion exchange membrane, which is the core component of basic anion exchange membrane, has become a hot issue both at home and abroad. The key scientific issues include how to increase the ion conductivity of anion exchange membrane; how to enhance its mechanical properties, especially in containing high density Mechanical properties of membrane materials when ion-exchange groups; how to obtain high stability under strong alkaline conditions.

In response to these challenges, the China University of Science and Technology Xu Tongwen team collaborated with international peers Neil. B. McKeown and Michael D. Guiver, etc. to make use of the V-shaped rigid structure of the Troger's Base structure to prevent the effective accumulation of polymer chains. Anion exchange membrane material with microporous structure, the monomers involved in the experiment are derived from commercial small molecules, and the synthesis process is simple. It does not require high temperature and high pressure, and can be completed using common reagents at room temperature. The pore size in the membrane is about 0.8 nm, and its BET surface area is in the range of 38-899 m2/g. The ion-conducting characteristics of the anion-exchange membrane obtained have been found that this type of membrane material can be realized at a very low ion exchange capacity. Ultra-high ion-conducting properties, such as the OH-conductivity of the DMBP-QTB membrane can reach 164.4 mS/cm when the ion exchange capacity is only 0.82 mmol/g, which is much higher than other reported anion exchange membranes.

The results of this study indicate that the perforated pore structure in the porous organic polymer is of great significance for achieving rapid anion transport; the anion has mass transfer characteristics different from that of a dense membrane structure in a confined space. The reviewer commented that: “This is a very interesting job. They used commercial reagents to prepare high-performance anion exchange membranes. The resulting material is characterized by completeness in all aspects and amazing performance. This type of polymerization Substrate anion membranes will cause a very wide range of research interests in the entire fuel cell research community."

The above research was supported by funds from the "973" project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Foundation, and the Collaborative Innovation Center for Energy Materials Chemistry of the Ministry of Education, the China Postdoctoral Fund Project, and the Youth Innovation Fund Project.
